Patients Discontinuing Slimming Injections Regain Weight Far More Rapidly Than Those on Conventional Diets

Weight management often requires ongoing approaches.

Fresh analysis reveals that patients who discontinue popular GLP-1 drugs like semaglutide or tirzepatide tend to recover lost weight at a significantly accelerated pace than those who halt traditional diet and exercise plans.

Findings released in a major medical journal points out that while obese individuals often shed about a fifth of their body weight while using the jabs, the weight is regained at an average rate of 0.8 kg per month once they quit.

"Users buying these medications should be cognizant of the risk of quick rebound weight gain when the treatment ends," warns lead investigator Dr. Susan Jebb.

Such speed of recovery implies a reversion to original weight within about 18 months.

Weighing Therapies

The research, which reviewed 37 of studies involving thousands of patients, contrasted the results of the injectable medications with other pills.

Scientists emphasize that individuals who shed pounds through lifestyle changes alone generally experience a slower creep back—approximately 100 grams monthly—post-intervention.

The Reason for the Rapid Regain

Nutrition scientists propose the mode of action of the injections explains the accelerated rebound.

These medications copy a body's own chemical called glucagon-like peptide-1, which controls hunger.

"Artificially providing the hormone concentrations far above than the body's typical production might result in the body to produce less of its endogenous GLP-1, and may also lessen responsiveness to its actions," noted Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition expert.

"Withdrawal of this medication leads to appetite is no longer kept in check, making overeating a significant risk."

A Chronic Disease?

The NHS suggest the injections for individuals with obesity-related health risks, alongside prescribed diet and exercise modifications.

A number of clinicians say that, considering the high risk of weight regain, the therapy is often long-term.

This view is reinforced by drug manufacturers, who note that the findings "emphasize the long-term character of obesity," similar to managing diseases like hypertension.

Patient Experiences

Individuals who have discontinued the jabs report a sudden return of cravings.

"It felt as if something flipping and you're instantly ravenous," described one woman.

The struggle is worsened if users have not adopted lasting dietary or behavioural modifications during treatment.

Significant Adoption

Survey data show that millions of people in the UK have tried these injections in the last 12 months, with desire being substantial.

  • Adoption is more common among females compared to males.
  • The 40s and 50s demographic shows the highest usage rates.
  • A large proportion obtain the medications through private prescriptions rather than the NHS.

Finally, experts stress that while these medications are potent tools for shedding pounds, they are not a permanent solution and maintained weight loss hinges on integrated lifestyle support.
