A minimum of 13 passengers lose their lives and 98 hurt in train derailment in the nation of Mexico.

A tragic train crash in the southern state of Oaxaca has resulted in the deaths of at least 13 people, an incident expected to reignite opposition criticisms regarding the speed and management of the country's flagship infrastructure initiatives.

The accident occurred on the trans-isthmus railway, a route constructed to join the Atlantic Ocean and Pacific Ocean across the narrowest part of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This endeavor was intended to provide an alternative rail cargo route to the Panama Canal, aimed at driving commercial progress in the area.

“We shall thoroughly investigate what caused this incident,” stated the national leader.

The official announced that, of the around 250 passengers on board, another 98 were wounded, with five of those in grave condition. The leader added plans to visit Oaxaca to confer with those impacted.

Key Undertaking of Former Government

The Interoceanic Train was a signature infrastructure project of the immediate past president, whose time in office concluded the previous year. This venture was closely associated with his government's economic vision for the southeastern region.

Another multi-billion dollar train initiative from that era, a passenger and freight circuit around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also central to the wider plan to stimulate the economy of a historically less developed part of the country.

Project Execution and Worries

The construction of both rail lines was managed by the nation's military, marking a notable growth of its role in public works. They were built at an fast-tracked speed, surpassing expectations to be at least partly launched before the end of that administration.

However, this fast-paced schedule had simultaneously sparked ongoing questions over operational security.

  • Sunday's derailment was the third such incident on the Interoceanic Train in the current year.
  • This encompasses an earlier collision this month when a train struck a truck at a crossing.
  • The other major rail project has also had two non-fatal derailments.

Appeals for Investigation and Halt

In the aftermath of the tragedy, the leader of a key rival party urged an urgent halt in the construction and operation of all similar projects.

This stoppage was proposed while awaiting a full technical review. The party stated that the situation "requires immediate answers."

In reply, the president maintained that the train had been functioning in total accordance with all security protocols. Assurances were given that the government would continue to be "accountable" in both the construction and management of these strategic initiatives.
